The Foundation

The Swire Chinese Language Foundation was established to expand Chinese language teaching in UK state schools, supported by its sole benefactor, John Swire & Sons Ltd., which has committed more than £30 million to this initiative. The company is the London-based parent of the Swire Group.

The Swire Group has been in business for over two centuries, and, for much of that time, has supported education around the world through its philanthropic activities. In 2016, the Group marked its 200th anniversary and 150 years of doing business in Greater China by creating the Swire Chinese Language Foundation, which joined several other Swire philanthropic initiatives, including the Swire Charitable Trust, Swire Family Charitable Trusts and Swire Scholarships Programme, together with the Swire Trust in Hong Kong.

“We have been funding the programme with the aim that, by the time we stop, our schools will be able to take Chinese on themselves as a mainstream subject in their curricula.”
